Query Intent Mapping for AEO

AEO intent mapping classifies every target query by intent type and maps it to the optimal content format, schema type, and answer engine target.

What Query Intent Mapping Produces

Query intent mapping is the practice of classifying every target query by its intent type, then assigning the optimal content format, schema markup type, and target answer engine for each. The output is a decision matrix that transforms a raw question keyword list into a content and schema production plan. Without intent mapping, content teams often use the same paragraph format for all content types - producing pages that are well-written but structurally mismatched to the query types they target. Intent mapping ensures each content piece uses the format AI systems expect for that query pattern, maximizing both featured snippet eligibility and AI Overview citation probability.

The Intent Mapping Workflow

1

1. Collect question keywords

Export all target question keywords from PAA research, Search Console, AlsoAsked, and community mining into a spreadsheet.

2

2. Classify intent using SERP signals

For each question, search Google and note the SERP format: paragraph snippet = definitional, list = procedural, table = comparison, PAA-heavy = multi-question informational.

3

3. Group by intent type

Sort the keyword list by intent type. This creates 5–6 intent groups. Each group gets a specific content format template.

4

4. Assign format and schema

Using the intent-to-format matrix, assign a content format and primary schema type to each question. Document this in the content brief before writing begins.

5

5. Map to content calendar

Group related questions within the same intent cluster into single content pieces (one per cluster). Prioritize clusters where AI Overviews are already triggering - confirmed AI intent.

6

6. Validate post-publish

After publishing, check Google Search Console for featured snippet wins and AI Overview appearances for each target query. Questions without wins after 60 days need format review.
