Why Citation Frequency Beats Keyword Position as the Primary AEO Success Metric

AI Share of Voice (AI-SoV) measures how often your brand or content appears as a cited source in AI-generated answers to queries related to your product category, compared to competitors. It is the primary KPI of any AEO program - replacing the traditional SERP-position-based share of voice metric with one calibrated to the AI answer era. A brand with 30% AI-SoV is cited as the answer source in 30 out of every 100 AI-generated responses for tracked queries in their category.

Unlike paid share of voice (which reflects marketing budget allocation), AI-SoV is earned entirely through content quality, schema coverage, entity authority, and featured snippet ownership. This makes it both democratic and deeply competitive - a mid-market brand with superior content can achieve higher AI-SoV than an enterprise competitor with inferior content, regardless of budget. It also makes AI-SoV genuinely informative as a competitive intelligence metric: a competitor's rising AI-SoV alerts you to content and authority improvements you may not have detected in traditional ranking tools.

AI-SoV is calculated at the query level: define a representative set of 50–100 queries in your category, check each weekly across your target AI platforms, and record whether your brand is cited. Divide citations by total queries tracked to get your AI-SoV percentage. Select 50 queries representing your full category. Include: 10 head terms (your product category keywords), 20 long-tail question queries (how/what/best [topic]), 10 comparison queries ([Brand] vs [Competitor]), 10 branded queries (your product/service names).
