AI agents - systems that browse and interact with websites to complete tasks - have technical site requirements distinct from traditional SEO crawl requirements. While Googlebot needs crawlable, indexable content to rank pages, AI agents need navigable, machine-parseable, machine-actionable sites to complete tasks. Navigation structure
AI agents navigate sites using HTML link structures - not JavaScript SPA routing, not client-side-rendered navigation, and not tab/accordion patterns that hide key content behind user interaction events. Agent-accessible site architecture requires: (1) All key pages linked from the homepage directly or through a maximum of 3 clicks (shallow link depth). (2) Sitemaps (XML sitemap + robots.txt) correctly configured and submitted to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. (3) All navigation menus rendered in HTML (not only via JavaScript). (4) No orphaned pages - every page discoverable through HTML link traversal. (5) Clear URL structure (descriptive path segments, no cryptic query strings on content pages).
